“God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.” 1 Thessalonians 4:7
The Greek word used here for impurity is “akatharsia” which means “uncleanness”.
The word holy in this verse doesn’t actually mean clean, it means “in sanctification”. Sanctification is a big word that basically means “separated to be made holy”. Often we think living a holy life means living a perfect life. It’s impossible so no one even attempts it. But this thought process leaves out Jesus. Jesus DID live a holy life. Jesus DID live a perfect, sinless life. He did this, as Ephesians 5:26-27 says, “to make us holy” or “to sanctify us”. The perfect life has been lived out already for us. The perfect life was sacrificed for us. The perfect life is alive in us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
A holy life is a life empowered by the Holy Spirit… in other words, the Holy Spirit has power over your will because you allow Him to lead you.
In our own power we are unclean. We are impure before we ever make an impure decision. We make impure decisions because we are impure. God invites us to accept the gift he has given us. He proposes we accept his son as our Groom so that he can take care of us. Why would you not want to accept something so wonderful? The perfect man, God himself in flesh, wants to lead, guide, protect, and love you. The result of letting him be that savior for you is so much more than eternal salvation – it’s an abundant life here and now. In the deepest part of your heart, you desire to be holy. God made you to want him.
The want of God is enough. Your desire to be made whole and wanted by something more than what you are is right. What you desire is good. God has provided for it. He has provided Jesus. Pursue nothing else but him and in your pursuit of him you will receive everything else you dream of: acceptance, fulfillment, and peace. Continued emptiness is all you will find living a life apart from Christ. Lay aside impurity – in Christ, “impure” is no longer who you are, you have been chosen by the Creator of the universe to be his Bride.
Keep your eyes on The Groom!
