Say Yes: Jesus & Mary, His Mother
“And Mary said, ‘Yes, I see it all now…'” Luke 1:38 (The Message)
Mary was a faith-filled girl. When the angel visited her that day to tell her she would become pregnant with God’s son, it’s likely she was only 12 or 13 years-old.
What a greeting she received from that angel! Look at how The Message puts it (Luke 1:28):
You’re beautiful with God’s beauty,
Beautiful inside and out!
God be with you.”
I read that and think, wow! For a split second she may have been rethinking the engagement with Joseph! Husbands, you can all start greeting us with these words every morning from now on. 🙂
The angel Gabriel was very kind to Mary. Her elder cousin Elizabeth was pregnant with a son, Jesus’ cousin, who would be known to us as John the Baptist. Gabriel tells Mary about this news so she has a way to respond to the incredible news she has just received. The angel sent her to someone who would encourage her. God is always setting us up with enough courage to “say yes”. And that is what Mary did.
“And Mary said (Luke 1:38),
Yes, I see it all now:
I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve.
Let it be with me
just as you say.”
“I see it all now” – she believed and she SAW beyond what was physically present. That is huge faith!
“I am the Lord’s…” – she knew who she belonged to. Before she belonged to Joseph and even before her own self, she belonged to God.
“ready to serve” – ANYTHING. She believed in the impossible. She believed it was worth a ruined reputation and the possible loss of Joseph and everything she was to serve the Lord.
“Let it be with me just as you say”. – YES! Yes Lord, let it be with me just as you say! Whatever you want, I’m yours.”
The lesson we can learn from Mary is that the impossible things happen because we believe Jesus will keep his “YES” promises to us. Not because we work up the strength, endurance, and guts to do something huge. Impossible things happen because we believe God will do what he says he’s going to do. God had promised a Messiah and Mary knew it and believed it!
“Watch for this: A girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She’ll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us).” Isaiah 7:14 (The Message)
What has he promised you? Say yes! Believe it is. Let it be with you and me just as he has said. Mary was looking for a savior. Are you?
Keep your eyes focused on The Groom!
