Clothed in Love: Kim

Hello Friends! My name is Kim Rankin and I am the contributing writer for “The Dress: Clothe Yourselves” for the Fall Intro issue of The Grace Mask Journal. I am so excited to get to spend some time sharing my world with you. My husband and I actively serve in our local church as kids’ pastors. We love being a part of teaching the next generation about Christ and are confident that they will change the world! I love being able to speak life into kids and watching them absorb and fully walk in how much God loves them…it is the best job in the world!! We have one son, who is 19 and in his second year of college. We have two dogs who like to think they are people and should be treated likewise. Life is fun, busy and full of adventure!

Made Whole:

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home. My parents divorced when I was in Kindergarten and, although they were very kind and I never truly felt it was my fault, on some level I always wondered.  What did I do? My parents both eventually remarried and I walked the road of blended families. It was a new strange reality. My parents were opposite in everything: the way they treated people, how they managed money, the way they spent their time and rules they had for me. I was able to see the world through different lenses and how attitudes affected decisions, and all this with step-parents and step-siblings and navigating new relationships with them. I met my husband when I was 19 and he introduced me to Christ. I love that Jesus understood my questions, my wonderings, even my anger about why certain things had happened. He took the heart that had been angry, hurt and confused and made it whole and fully His. Jesus took it all and loved me so completely through it. I work with many kids who have been touched by the pain of divorce and are living in blended families. I am able to speak into parents lives about what their children are feeling and understand from a child’s point of view questions they have about their world. It is not an education that I wanted but one that I am profoundly grateful to have.

His Words Evoking Beauty:

God’s word is beautiful and amazingly simple. If the Bible says it, I believe it. I have an amazing relationship with my earthly father and it makes a relationship with my heavenly father an easier translation. When the Bible says God loves me…I believe it is true. I can’t take a part of the Bible and trust its authority while rejecting other parts, it all has value and truth for my life. I fully believe that if it is written that I am his child…I am! I am adopted and truly a daughter of the King! But it doesn’t just stop at me. God’s word is true for every person I see. They may not personally believe it but that doesn’t stop it from being truth. God loves people. He loves His church. He loves the difficult, the broken, the hurting, the young, the old and everyone who has breath. I want to represent Him well and draw others into His family.  We are His people…We are his Bride!

Bringing Out the Best:

I love Ephesians 5:27! It reminds me of learning to ride a bike. I tried and fell. I tried again and fell again, but my dad kept encouraging me to try just a bit longer. He patiently and lovingly dusted me off, bandaged skinned knees and helped me overcome the challenge. My dad brought me to the point that I was riding my bike without help, without his steady hand on the back of my seat. He helped me face a fear. My dad brought out the best in me! Christ wants to fully do that in each of our lives. He wants us to bring our fears, challenges, areas where we don’t know what we are doing…bring it all to Him so He can patiently and lovingly tend our wounds, speak words of encouragement over us, hold us up so kindly and allow us to walk in His victory. Giving God access to every area of my life, my hurts, my joys, my questions…all of it, has made me stronger and brought more joy than I could ever have thought possible. Oh how He loves us! When we are walking in that knowledge we are able to lovingly speak, encourage and help others as well…this is the Church! It is HIs beautiful design!
